In mid August 1972 Mrs. Skestos of Columbus, Ohio visited Rolls-Royce of Columbus and placed an order on this very special Corniche convertible. She was very specific in what she wanted and had this car built specifically to her tastes.
With a total price of $38,645 this Corniche was one of the most expensive cars available to purchase at that time. She ordered the car in a paint to sample color of Roman purple metallic with a beige convertible top and Magnolia leather interior. She specified that the plum colored carpets had magnolia binding and that the piping on the seats were in plum hide. She also specified that the top role and the surrounding ashtrays also in plum hide. To finish it off, she had twin thin Magnolia fine lines painted along the coach lines of the car. So specific was Mrs. Skestos, that she specified front fog lamps be mounted on the chrome bumper and an altimeter be installed on the glove box door.
Throughout this cars 43 year life, it has only had three owners. Every one of them lovingly taking care of this car to maintain it to the highest standards. We purchased this car from a local Florida Rolls-Royce collector. He felt that owning five Corniche's was too much and sold a couple of them.
This was one of the last chrome bumper Corniche's to be offered in the United States market. It has exquisite attention to detail and is a rapidly appreciating classic. Prior to purchasing this car we looked into its history and found that it had extensive service work performed the year prior to us purchasing. Included in that work was:
Replacement of all ignition wires
New cap and rotor
New assembly leads to all of the spark plugs
Repair of the horn
Adjust driver's door striker
Evacuate and recharge air-conditioning system with R12
Overhaul carburetors with new needle and seat
Replacement of the spark plugs
Overhaul of the header tank
Repair wire harness
Bead both brake systems and refill brake reservoirs
Repair inoperable windows
Replace power steering line
When we purchased the car we found it had only been driven about 100 miles in the previous year. From sitting the car needed some work, so to get the car ready for sale, and ensure it is a turn key Rolls-Royce we had performed:
Repair in operable rear window
Repair in operable convertible top
Change oil and filter
Reset Idle
Replace battery
Recharge air-conditioning with R12
Check condition of brakes, belts, and hoses – they were all found to be in excellent condition
Fit for new tires
Install new stainless steel wiper blades
Repair inoperable reverse lights
Inspect and repair any lights that were not working, replace faulty headlamps
Replace clips from a loose trim ring
Tighten fog lamps
Fit new rear fuel filter and two new carburetor filters
Replace Water pump
This Corniche runs and drives beautifully. Upon twisting the key it idles smoothly and you could barely feel it running. The air-conditioning blows cold and every light inside and out works. Every switch works, every window, seat control and electrical function operate as they should.
Driving this car is an absolute pleasure, it's still maintains its tight regal feel and has an incredible presence. It has only been worked on by Rolls-Royce specialists. We of course have a copy of all the work that we have performed, and the work that we noted from the previous owner as well. We also have the build records, original sales invoice, copy of the window sticker and records that were provided from the Rolls-Royce foundation. We are happy to email these upon request
